A controlled aerobic composting method developed by Sir Albert Howard at the Institute of Plant Industry in Indore, India, between 1924 and 1931. The technique layers green plant matter, animal manure, urine-soaked earth, wood ash, and water, then turns the heap at intervals to maintain aerobic conditions. The result is stable humus in roughly ninety days, from materials any farm or village already has on hand, with no capital input. The Indore process codified what Indian peasants had practiced informally for centuries and made the technique reproducible at any scale, anywhere.
