Hudson
Also known as: Hudson, NY, Hudson, New York
A small upper-Hudson river city (~5,800) in Columbia County, NY, on the east bank between the Catskills and the Berkshires. Founded 1785 by Nantucket whalers; 19th-century industrial decline; rediscovered late-20th-century as a Warren Street antiques and design corridor that has since matured into one of the upper Hudson's densest independent-business towns. The directory's Hudson anchor is the Sadhana Center for Yoga & Meditation on Warren Street, with its explicit yoga-and-justice framing.
What this is
Hudson is a small upper-Hudson city on the east bank of the river, between the Catskills (west) and [[berkshires|the Berkshires]] (east). Founded 1785 by Nantucket whalers seeking a defensible inland port after the Revolutionary War, it became one of the busiest whaling-and-shipping ports of the early Republic before 19th-century industrial decline. Late-20th-century rediscovery as a Warren Street antiques district has since matured into a year-round independent-business economy spanning food, design, contemplative practice, and the arts.
