Bear Mountain State Park

The Bear Mountain Inn (1915), Perkins Memorial Tower (1934, WPA), and the Bear Mountain Bridge (1924, the first vehicular Hudson crossing south of Albany) are the trio of New Deal–era infrastructure that defined the park’s modern footprint. The Appalachian Trail’s first completed section opened here in 1923; today the AT crosses the Bear Mountain Bridge and rises over the summit on its way north. The Trailside Museums and Zoo, founded 1927, is the oldest small zoo in the United States and the model for many state-park interpretive centers built in the 20th century.
Practical
Open year-round; trail access is free. Vehicle parking fee in season at the main lot near the inn. Major Highlands trailheads: Major Welch Trail (steep direct ascent), Appalachian Trail (gentle grade through stone steps), Perkins Memorial Drive (vehicle access to summit, Memorial Day–November). The park connects directly to Harriman SP to the west — together the two parks form a 47,000-acre contiguous block. The Bear Mountain Inn operates as a hotel and restaurant; Hessian Lake offers seasonal swimming and rowboat rentals.
