An invasive aphid-like insect native to East Asia, introduced to the eastern United States by 1951 (likely earlier) and now established across most of the eastern hemlock's range. HWA feeds on twigs at the base of needles, eventually starving and killing the tree over 4–10 years. Has caused continental-scale collapse of the eastern hemlock-northern-hardwood forest type, destroying most of the southern Appalachian hemlock stands and now threatening the northern strongholds (Catskills, Poconos, Adirondacks, Hudson Highlands). The single most consequential biotic threat to forest substrate in the bioregion.

What it is

A small (~1.5 mm) sap-sucking insect related to aphids, native to Japan and the Asian mainland where it coevolved with Asian hemlock species. The Asian hemlocks tolerate HWA feeding (and have natural predator beetles); the eastern North American hemlock has neither defense.

HWA is identifiable in the field by the white, woolly egg masses (ovisacs) it produces at the base of hemlock needles — the “woolly” of the name. By the time the woolly stage is visible, infestation is established.

Life cycle and damage

HWA feeds at the base of hemlock needles, removing nutrients and triggering the tree to shut down its needle growth. Infested branches lose needles, then die. As more branches die, the canopy thins, and 4 to 10 years after infestation the tree is dead.

Two parthenogenetic generations per year (sistens overwinter; progrediens reproduce in spring) drive rapid population growth in suitable conditions. Cold winters (sustained below ~-5°F) kill enough HWA to slow spread; mild winters allow population explosions.
