A planted, managed strip of trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants forming a boundary or corridor on agricultural land. The defining feature of pre-industrial European farmland — Britain has an estimated 700,000 km of historic hedgerow, some over 800 years old. North American agriculture spent the 20th century systematically removing hedgerows for tractor efficiency.   • Layer for vertical structure.
