A small deciduous tree or large shrub in the birch family (Betulaceae), native to Europe and western Asia. Corylus avellana is a small deciduous tree or large shrub (rarely more than 8m). The flowering catkins emerge in late winter — among the earliest pollen producers of the European year, and an important early-season food for honeybees.
