Front Range

Also known as: Colorado Front Range, Denver Metro, Boulder–Denver–Fort Collins corridor

The Colorado urban corridor along the eastern base of the Rocky Mountain Front Range — Fort Collins through Boulder through Denver through Colorado Springs. The continental ecotone where short-grass prairie meets the Rockies; arid, fast-growing, snow-fed, and one of the densest natural-foods and plant-based food cultures inland.

Why this entry

The Front Range enters the directory as the bioregion anchor for the 8+ Denver vegan operations from the 2026-05-11 Overpass bulk ingest. Stub.

What’s distinctive

 • The Rocky Mountain wall. The Front Range is the abrupt continental divide rising from the prairie at the western edge of every Front Range city’s skyline. The mountains are the snowpack, the water, the recreation infrastructure, and the climate buffer.
 • Short-grass prairie east. Once one of North America’s great grassland ecosystems; mostly converted to dryland wheat and CAFOs. Restoration is the long arc here.
 • Boulder as natural-foods origin. The contemporary US natural-foods industry has deep roots in Boulder — Celestial Seasonings, Aspen Mulling, Alfalfa’s, Wild Oats (the original health-food chain that Whole Foods eventually consumed). The cultural memory is dense.

Stub status

Expand as Front Range listings accumulate: Arapaho and Cheyenne pre-history, the South Platte watershed crisis, the Hayman-and-Marshall-fire era of wildland-urban-interface burns, and the institutional ecosystem (The Land Institute‘s Colorado work, the Rocky Mountain Institute, Boulder’s farmers markets).
