The annual state fair for Delaware, held in Harrington since 1920 on a 300-acre fairgrounds. Originally chartered as the Kent and Sussex County Fair on February 17, 1920, by a group of community residents who first met around a potbelly stove in the Harrington railroad station. Renamed the Delaware State Fair in 1962. Today a ten-day event at the end of July featuring 4-H youth competitions, agricultural exhibits, livestock shows, and the institutional continuity of Delmarva agriculture across more than a century.

History

The Delaware State Fair began as an idea around a potbelly stove in the [[harrington-delaware|Harrington]] railroad station in 1919. The original group of residents — interested in a public agricultural fair that would promote farming and bring rural communities together — incorporated as the Kent and Sussex County Fair on January 1920. They purchased 30 acres on February 17, 1920, for $6,000, and held the first fair the following summer.

The fair has been held continuously since. It changed its name to the Delaware State Fair in 1962. The fairgrounds today encompass over 300 acres.
