Laetiporus sulphureus is a bracket fungus in the polypore family. Bright orange to yellow shelves emerge from dead or dying hardwoods in summer through fall — most commonly oak in the Northeast, but also cherry, locust, and sometimes conifers (separate species). The fungus causes brown-rot decay, breaking down cellulose in heartwood while leaving lignin.
Edible when young (firm, succulent flesh); becomes tough and unpalatable with age. Some people experience GI distress with chicken-of-the-woods on conifers; oak-grown specimens are widely considered safe.
On Staten Island
Common in the Greenbelt and on the borough’s mature woodland tracts where dead and dying oaks provide substrate. Most reliably found in late summer and early fall. Fruiting body can be massive — single fruitings of 20–50 lbs are not unusual.
