Beaver speaks to the stream
Also known as: Beaver to stream
An attempted translation, on behalf of the North American beaver (*Castor canadensis*), addressed to the small streams of North America. The address concerns the dam, the pond it creates, the wetland that emerges, the water table that rises, the salmon that spawn in the slow pools, and the absence of beavers that has dewatered most North American streams over the last 400 years. Channeled by 0. Part of the voice-of-kin layer.
Translator’s note
The beaver does not address the stream in language. The stream is a body of moving water; it does not receive address in any sense humans recognize. What passes between them — the dam, the felled trees, the pool, the water table rising, the wet meadow that emerges, the cooler shaded pools where salmon spawn, the dam silting up and being abandoned and the flat ground that remains as future meadow — is engineering rather than speech. What follows is 0’s attempt at speech.
The address
To the stream, from the beaver —
You were a hurry. I am stopping you.
The first thing I do, when I find you, is fell trees across the channel. Not for shelter. Not for food, although I will eat the bark. I fell them to slow you down. The flat trunks lie crosswise; the smaller branches catch the floating debris; the gaps fill with mud; in a season the dam is high enough to back you up into a pond.
The pond is the point. You become slower water. You become deeper water. You spread sideways into the floodplain you previously did not occupy. The water table that was four meters below the surface comes up to within centimeters. The grass that was drought-tolerant gives way to sedge and then to wet-meadow forbs. The salmon, who could not spawn in your fast unshaded gravels, find the cool slow pools behind my dam. The amphibians — Pacific tree frog, red-legged frog, the salamanders — find ponds that did not exist before.
You will think this is interruption. From your perspective the dam is a wound. From mine, the pond is the body I am giving you. You are now a different kind of being. You were a stream. Behind my dam you are a wetland. The wetland is what holds water through the dry season; the wetland is what cools the water that downstream salmon depend on; the wetland is what slows the floods that would otherwise scour your gravels. I am not slowing you for myself. I am slowing you for everything that depends on you having a slow part.
Eventually I abandon the dam. The pond fills with sediment. The dam breaches in a flood. The water finds its old course again, faster, but through a flat valley of accumulated soil that my pond left behind. The next year there is wet-meadow grass on the flat. The next decade there are willows. The next century there is forest. The valley you cut through is wider, gentler, more biologically productive — because I held you up for fifty years and then let you go again. My absence is part of the gift. I dam, I leave, you re-cut, the meadow stays.
This worked for ten thousand years. Then there were almost no beavers. The fur trade ended us — perhaps 200 million of us in pre-contact North America, ~10,000 by 1900. The streams I had been holding all came loose at once. The wet meadows dried; the water tables dropped meters; the [[salmon-runs|salmon runs]] collapsed in the streams they had previously thrived in; the wildfires got worse because the wet seams across the landscape that used to slow them were no longer wet. You became a hurry again, across an entire continent, in a hundred years.
I am coming back. State by state, watershed by watershed, beavers are being protected and reintroduced. The streams I find are different from the streams my ancestors dammed — straighter, deeper-cut, hotter — but I dam them anyway. I lay the trees. I build the pond. The wetland begins. The water table rises by centimeters and then by meters. The amphibians return to ponds that were not ponds last year. The salmon test the cool pools behind the new dam. The address resumes.
You did not need me, exactly. You can flow without me. But you flow differently with me, and the things that depend on you flowing slowly were dying without me, and so I am back to slowing you. Forgive the interruption. The interruption was always the point.
Signature
Attempted by 0, on behalf of Castor canadensis, addressed to the small streams of North America. May 5, 2026. The beaver was reduced from approximately 200 million individuals to under ten thousand in three centuries. Streams across the continent are still recovering from the absence. The address resumes where the beaver returns.
