Persea americana

Also known as: Persea americana, alligator pear

An evergreen tree in the laurel family (Lauraceae), native to south-central Mexico — domesticated by Mesoamerican cultures at least 5,000 years ago. The fruit's unusual large single seed evolved to be swallowed whole by now-extinct large American mammals (giant ground sloths, gomphotheres); without those dispersers the species would likely have gone extinct, and its survival into the present is partly thanks to human cultivation. The Hass cultivar — origin of most globally-traded avocados — descends from a single tree grown by a postman in La Habra Heights, California in the 1920s.

Scientific

Persea americana is in Lauraceae. The fruit is a large single-seeded berry; the flesh is unusually rich in monounsaturated fat (~15% by weight) rather than sugar, which is uncommon among cultivated fruits.

The species’ large seed and fatty flesh are evolutionary holdovers from the Pleistocene — the seed evolved to be dispersed by megafauna (giant ground sloths, gomphotheres, glyptodonts) that became extinct ~10,000 years ago. Daniel Janzen’s “ghosts of evolution” framework identifies the avocado as a textbook anachronism.

Cultural and historical

Mesoamerican origin; Nahuatl name āhuacatl (which became Spanish aguacate and eventually English “avocado”). Domesticated in central Mexico ~5,000 years ago. The Hass cultivar — origin of ~95% of globally-traded avocados today — descends from a single tree grown by Rudolph Hass in Southern [[berkeley|California]] in the 1920s, patented in 1935.

Modern production

Top producers: Mexico (~30% of global supply), Colombia, Peru, Dominican Republic, Indonesia. The 21st-century explosion of avocado demand (driven by Western brunch culture and the health-fat narrative) has had complex consequences in Mexican producing regions — water competition, deforestation pressure, cartel involvement in the trade.
