A long-lived, slow-growing evergreen tree (40–80 ft, occasionally taller) of acidic, freshwater swamps and seasonally-flooded wetlands of the Atlantic Coastal Plain. Forms dense single-species stands historically covering hundreds of thousands of acres from Maine to Mississippi. On the Delmarva Peninsula, Atlantic white cedar swamps are now a small fraction of their historical extent due to logging, drainage, and hydrological changes. The remaining stands hold endemic biodiversity — including specialist insects, bog turtle, and rare orchids — found nowhere else in the region.
Scientific
Atlantic white cedar (Chamaecyparis thyoides) is a member of the cypress family (Cupressaceae) — a slender, conical evergreen with scale-like blue-green foliage and small (~6mm) cones. Bark is fibrous, reddish-brown, and shed in long strips.
Range: a narrow band along the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains from southern Maine south through Florida and west to [[batesville-ms|Mississippi]]. The species occurs only in freshwater wetlands with acidic, peaty, hydric soils — a highly specific habitat.
Growth: slow but long-lived; trees of 200+ years old are documented. Forms dense single-species stands (“white cedar swamps”) with little understory, where the canopy excludes most competing vegetation.
Delmarva populations
Historically, Atlantic white cedar swamps covered substantial portions of the [[delmarva-peninsula|Delmarva Peninsula]]‘s freshwater wetlands. By the late 20th century, the peninsula’s white cedar stands had been reduced to a small fraction of their historical extent due to:
