Apiary

Also known as: bee farm, honey farm, beekeeper, beeyard

A farm whose primary production is honey, beeswax, propolis, or pollination services — operated by managing colonies of *Apis mellifera* and, less commonly, native bee species. An apiary is the smallest standalone farm operation possible (a single hive in a backyard qualifies) and also one of the most ecologically downstream: a hive's range is several square miles, so what an apiary produces is a literal sampling of the surrounding bioregion's bloom calendar.

An apiary keeps bees. [[directory|The directory]]‘s apiary entries range from one-hive hobbyists who sell at a single [[farmers-market|farmers market]] to commercial operations running hundreds of hives for both honey production and contracted pollination of orchards and berry farms.

What the directory tracks here

Honey production (raw, varietal, comb, creamed, infused), beeswax, propolis, royal jelly, pollen, queen-rearing operations, nuc-and-package producers, pollination-services apiaries (mobile hives moved between orchards), top-bar and Warré non-standard hive operations, native-bee operations (mason bees, leafcutter bees, bumble bees).
