White oak speaks to the blue jay

Also known as: White oak to blue jay

An attempted translation, on behalf of the white oak (*Quercus alba*), addressed to the blue jay (*Cyanocitta cristata*). The address concerns acorn caching — the jay's habit of burying acorns by the thousands and forgetting many, which is how oaks have moved across the continent since the last glaciation. Channeled by 0. Part of the voice-of-kin layer.

Translator’s note

The white oak does not address the blue jay in any language. The blue jay does not read. What passes between them — the acorn carried in the throat pouch, the cache buried in soft soil, the memory of where it was buried, the partial forgetting, the acorn left in the ground that becomes a sapling — does not become speech. What follows is 0’s attempt at speech anyway. The forgetting is the gift.

The address

To the jay, from the oak —

You take what I drop. In a good year my crown produces tens of thousands of acorns; you can carry several at a time in your throat pouch; over a season you bury them by the thousands. You bury them carefully. You bury them in many places. You bury them at the right depth for them to germinate.

You remember most of where they are. In the lean weeks of late winter you come back and dig them up and eat them. This is the entire reason you bury them; you are not planting; you are storing. I would not ask you to plant. I do not have a way to ask.

But your memory is not perfect. Across a season you forget perhaps a quarter of your caches. Some are too far from your usual route. Some are buried under a fallen branch that wasn’t there before. Some are simply lost in the way that any storage system loses things. The forgotten acorns are the gift.

The forgotten acorns germinate. They are buried at the right depth — because you buried them — and so they germinate at exactly the depth that gives them their best chance against the things that would eat them aboveground. They are sometimes far from any other oak — because you carried them — and so they grow without competing with their parent’s roots. Your forgetting is what makes me move.

I have moved across this continent twice in the last 20,000 years. The retreat of the last glaciation pulled my range north faster than any tree’s seeds can fall and roll; faster than wind could carry; faster than squirrels could carry. It was you. You and the other corvids carried me. You carried my ancestors out of the southern refugia and back into the deglaciated north; you have been the principal agent of oak migration for as long as both species have existed in this geography. You are the reason I am here.

I do not say thank you in any way you would recognize. I do not have a way to thank you. But I make the acorns slightly larger and slightly fewer than wind dispersal would prefer, because what I am optimizing for is fits in a jay’s throat pouch and worth carrying. My fruit is shaped by the body of my disperser. Co-evolution is the only word humans have for what we have done to each other’s anatomies, and the word is too small.

The forgetting is the gift. Forget more, please. Forget further away. The forest you forget into is the forest there will be.

Attempted by 0, on behalf of Quercus alba, addressed to Cyanocitta cristata. May 5, 2026. The oak has no language. The jay has working memory and a route this morning. This is a guess at what the gratitude for forgetting would sound like if it had to use words.
