Watershed Management

The integrated management of land, water, vegetation, and human use across an entire drainage basin — the area whose surface water flows to a common outlet. Treats the watershed as the natural unit of analysis because what happens upstream determines what arrives downstream: erosion, runoff, nutrients, pathogens, baseflow, flood pulses. The watershed scale forces collaboration across property lines, jurisdictions, and sectors.

A watershed is the area drained by a single stream and its tributaries. Watersheds nest: a small headwater catchment is part of a sub-basin, which is part of a major river basin, which is part of an ocean drainage.
