One of the most-common bracket fungi worldwide — distinctive concentric multicolored bands on small fan-shaped fruitings. Decomposer of dead hardwoods. Long-standing use in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine; the polysaccharides PSK (krestin) and PSP are approved adjunct cancer therapies in Japan. Common across Staten Island's woodlands wherever dead hardwoods accumulate.

Scientific

Trametes versicolor is a polypore bracket fungus producing thin, leathery, fan-shaped fruitings (~1–4 inches across) in overlapping clusters. Concentric bands of color range across browns, blues, greens, oranges, whites, blacks. Pore surface (underside) is white-cream and very fine.

Saprotroph on dead hardwoods. White-rot decay (degrades both lignin and cellulose). One of the most-cosmopolitan and abundant fungi in the temperate world.

Bioactive polysaccharides — PSK (also called krestin) and PSP — extracted from turkey-tail mycelium have decades of clinical research. Approved as adjunct cancer therapies in Japan (PSK has been part of the Japanese national formulary since the 1980s). Western clinical research continues; the FDA does not currently approve PSK as a therapeutic in the U.S.

On Staten Island

Common on dead hardwoods in the Greenbelt and across the borough’s mature woodland tracts. Year-round fruitings, though new growth is most-conspicuous in fall. Among the easiest medicinal fungi to identify in the field.
