Climate tipping point

A critical threshold in a climate or ecological system, beyond which the system shifts rapidly to a new state — typically with little warning and often without a return path. Distinct from gradual change. Examples include Amazon rainforest dieback, West Antarctic ice sheet collapse, Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) shutdown, permafrost thaw, coral reef collapse. Recent research (Lenton et al., others) suggests several tipping points may be near or already crossed at current warming levels (~1.2°C above pre-industrial).
