Wohlleben spent over twenty years as a forester in the German state forestry service before taking a position as forest manager for the small municipal forest of Hümmel, where he was given latitude to depart from industrial-rotation forestry. The German title — Das geheime Leben der Bäume — is a deliberate play on Das Leben der Bäume, a much earlier German forestry text. Forest scientists including Stephen Woodward, David Robinson, and Justine Karst have argued that Wohlleben (and Simard’s more popular formulations) overstate evidence on mycorrhizal-network mediation of inter-tree resource transfer.
