Stewardship

The orientation that humans hold land, resources, traditions, and institutions in trust for present and future generations rather than as private property to be used up. Articulated across many traditions: Indigenous land relationship; Christian teaching of the earth as God's gift entrusted to human care; the agrarian tradition of Wendell Berry, Wes Jackson, and the Land Institute; ecosystem-services framing of conservation; the regenerative-agriculture principle of leaving land better than you found it. Distinguished from ownership (which is fundamentally about use rights) by its emphasis on duty — the steward is accountable to the land, the future, and the broader community in ways the owner is not.
