Climate-change-driven sea-level rise is the dominant 21st-century pressure: salt-marsh die-back (“ghost forests”), beach loss, and tidal-flooding intrusion are all measurable across the bioregion. The active conservation response — Pew Charitable Trusts marsh-conservation work, the Coastal Georgia Land Trust, the Edisto Island Open Land Trust, the [[beaufort-sc|South Carolina]] Department of Natural Resources Heritage Preserves — is among the most institutionally-developed in the eastern U.S.
