Scythe

A pre-industrial mowing tool — a curved blade on a long shaft, swung horizontally from the hips — that, properly tuned, mows a hay meadow faster than a string trimmer, quieter than a lawnmower, and with no fuel for the lifetime of the blade. Made nearly extinct by gasoline mowers between 1930 and 1970; still in active use across rural Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and in steady revival among small farmers and homesteaders since 2000.
