Geukensia demissa is a 2–4 inch saltwater mussel native to the Atlantic coast from the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the Yucatán. Lives semi-buried in cordgrass-marsh substrate, attached by byssal threads to Spartina roots and to other mussels. Filter-feeds plankton from tidal water during high tide.

Documented mutualism with [[smooth-cordgrass|smooth cordgrass]]: ribbed mussels deposit nitrogen-rich pseudofeces near Spartina roots, fertilizing the grass; the grass stabilizes the substrate that lets the mussel beds persist. The two species are tightly coupled.

Not a major commercial species (tough, salty, less tasty than blue mussels). Ecologically, however, the ribbed mussel is a foundation species of healthy salt marsh.

On Staten Island

Common in the borough’s remaining salt-marsh habitat — Lemon Creek, the harbor edges of [[mount-loretto-unique-area|Mount Loretto]], tidal flats around the South Shore. Where Spartina is healthy, ribbed mussels are present; where the marsh has been degraded or filled, both species are gone.
