The peach palm — one of the few palms fully domesticated in pre-Columbian Amazonia, grown for its starchy orange fruit and, increasingly, for heart-of-palm that can be cut without killing the plant. A keystone of Indigenous Amazonian agroforestry for thousands of years and a model crop for forest-positive cultivation in the estuary economy.

Pupunha (Bactris gasipaes), the peach palm, is one of the very few palms fully domesticated by Indigenous Amazonian peoples before European contact.

What’s distinctive

The starchy, oily orange fruit is boiled and eaten as a staple across the Amazon; selection over millennia produced cultivated forms so changed from any wild ancestor that the wild progenitor is still debated. Pupunha is also the preferred plant for cultivated heart-of-palm: because it is multi-stemmed and suckers from the base, a stem can be cut for palmito while the plant lives on — the opposite of the destructive single-stem palm-heart harvest that drove other species toward collapse.

That trait makes pupunha a model for forest-positive cultivation in the same estuary the [[acai|açaí]] economy occupies. It grows in the agroforestry plots of [[caboclo|caboclo]] and [[ribeirinho|ribeirinho]] households alongside [[cassava|manioc]] and açaí, and it carries the same lesson [[extractivism|forest extractivism]] does: the harvest that leaves the plant standing is the harvest that lasts.
