Pinus rigida
A small-to-medium fire-adapted pine native to the eastern U.S. — the dominant tree of the New Jersey Pine Barrens and the species that defines pine-barrens-style ecosystems wherever they exist. Found on Staten Island at Clay Pit Ponds State Park Preserve, where sandy acidic soils support a regionally-rare pine-barrens-style community. Cones serotinous (release seeds primarily after fire heat); the species depends on periodic fire for regeneration.

Pinus rigida is a 40–70 ft tree with thick fire-resistant bark and serotinous cones — cones that remain closed until exposed to fire heat, then release seeds. The species can resprout from the trunk or roots after fire, which is unusual among pines. Adapted to nutrient-poor, acidic, sandy soils where richer-soil species can’t compete.
Without periodic fire, pitch-pine stands gradually transition to oak-dominated forest as oak species succeed the pines.
