Mountain laurel
Kalmia latifolia
A native broadleaf evergreen shrub of acidic, well-drained eastern hardwood forests — and one of the most-spectacular flowering shrubs of the Eastern U.S. Pink-and-white cup-shaped flowers in May–June with a remarkable spring-loaded pollination mechanism (anthers held under tension that fire pollen onto pollinators). Common in some sections of the Staten Island Greenbelt and at acidic forest sites. State flower of Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

Kalmia latifolia is a 5–15 ft (occasionally to 30 ft) broadleaf evergreen of the heath family (Ericaceae). Acid-soil specialist; tolerates poor, rocky, well-drained sites. Showy pink-white cup-shaped flowers in May–June.
The pollination mechanism is unusual: anthers are held in pockets under tension. When a pollinator (typically a bumblebee) lands on the flower and brushes the trigger, the anthers spring forward and dust the bee with pollen. The mechanism evolved to ensure cross-pollination — visiting bees can’t easily access nectar without triggering the spring.
All parts of the plant are toxic to humans and most livestock. Honey from mountain laurel nectar is also toxic (“mad honey”).
On Staten Island
Present in some sections of the Greenbelt on acidic, well-drained forest soils. Less abundant on the borough than in higher-elevation Northeastern forests; SI’s relatively rich-and-flat soils don’t favor the species in many areas.
