Morchella is a genus of ascomycete fungi (sac fungi) — distinct from most edible mushrooms, which are basidiomycetes. Honeycomb-pitted hollow conical fruiting bodies. Multiple closely-related species across the Northern Hemisphere.
Ecology is partially understood: most North American morels appear to be facultative — sometimes saprotrophic on dead wood, sometimes mycorrhizal with living tree roots, sometimes both. Strong association with recently-dead trees (especially American elm killed by Dutch elm disease, ash killed by emerald ash borer), and with recently-disturbed soils — burned areas commonly produce morel flushes the following spring.
