An American heritage turkey breed developed at the University of Massachusetts in the 1950s and 1960s by Dr. J. Robert Smyth — a small white turkey developed specifically for backyard and small-flock production at a time when the commercial industry was consolidating around the much larger Broad-Breasted White. Mature toms 12–18 lbs (about half the weight of commercial Broad-Breasted Whites); naturally mating, fertile, capable of flight; productive on standard pastured-poultry feed. The breed was nearly lost when university funding for the breeding program ended in the 1980s; recovery led by the Heritage Turkey Foundation and Slow Food USA. The Livestock Conservancy classifies the breed as Critical.

Robert Smyth, who recognized that the rapid commercial-industry consolidation around the very-large Broad-Breasted White had left a significant gap: there was no small white turkey suited to backyard production, small farms, or family-scale Thanksgiving production. Smyth crossed Royal Palm and Broad-Breasted White lines to develop a turkey with the white plumage that produced clean processed carcasses, but with mature size approximately half that of the commercial Broad-Breasted White.
The university breeding program ended in the 1980s when funding shifted away from poultry conservation work. The remaining Midget White breeding stock dispersed to a small number of heritage-turkey breeders; the breed nearly went extinct through the 1990s. Recovery began with the Heritage Turkey Foundation and [[slow-food|Slow Food]] USA’s Heritage Turkey project in the early 2000s. Population today is approximately 300–500 breeding birds; [[livestock-conservancy|the Livestock Conservancy]] classifies the breed as Critical.
The breed is well-suited to small-flock and homestead production: small enough to be manageable, naturally mating (eliminating the artificial-insemination requirement of the Broad-Breasted commercial lines), capable of flight, and productive on pasture and standard feed.
