Memex Lineage

The eighty-year lineage of thinkers and builders working out a single problem: how to externalize and share the associative structure of human thought. The lineage starts with [[vannevar-bush|Vannevar Bush]]'s 1945 essay 'As We May Think,' which proposed the **Memex** — a desk-sized device that would let a researcher build and follow associative trails through documents. [[doug-engelbart|Doug Engelbart]] read Bush in 1945 and spent forty years building working augmentation systems at SRI; the 1968 'Mother of All Demos' shipped the conceptual primitives (windows, mouse, hypertext, real-time collaboration) the next half-century would refine. The five canonical figures

Vannevar Bush — As We May Think (1945)

Bush, then director of the U.S. Office of Scientific Research and Development, published “[[bush-as-we-may-think-1945|As We May Think]]” in The Atlantic Monthly in July 1945. The essay proposed the Memex: a desk-sized device, built from microfilm and mechanical linkages, that would let a researcher build and follow associative trails through documents. Bush’s central observation was that human memory works by association, but the storage media of his day (libraries, indexes, filing cabinets) were organized by hierarchy — and the mismatch was wasting cognitive work at civilizational scale.

Doug Engelbart — augmentation (1962–1968)

Engelbart read “[[bush-as-we-may-think-1945|As We May Think]]” in 1945 and spent the next forty years building it. His 1962 SRI report Augmenting Human Intellect: A Conceptual Framework generalized Bush’s proposal into a research program: the goal of computing should be the augmentation of human intellect, the extension of what a human mind can do by partnering it with a responsive computational system.

Engelbart’s 1968 demonstration at the Fall Joint Computer Conference — known after the fact as “[[sourdough-starter|the Mother]] of All Demos” — shipped the conceptual primitives the next half-century of computing would refine: the mouse, windowed displays, hypertext, structured editing, real-time collaborative editing, screen-sharing, video conferencing. Ted Nelson — hypertext, hypermedia, Xanadu (1965–)

Nelson coined the word hypertext in 1965 and hypermedia shortly after. His Project Xanadu, conceived in the 1960s and developed over decades, proposed a radically more ambitious document substrate than the one the web ultimately shipped: bidirectional links, transclusion (live inclusion of source content rather than copying), micropayments to authors, version-history preservation, and a global addressing scheme that would not break.

Xanadu was never fully realized at scale; Nelson is correspondingly cantankerous about what the web became. But Nelson’s vocabulary is the vocabulary the lineage now uses, and Xanadu is the maximalist form against which the web is the lossy implementation. See [[ted-nelson]].

Tim Berners-Lee — the World Wide Web (1989–)

Berners-Lee, working at CERN in 1989, designed and implemented the deliberately minimalist form of hypertext that became the World Wide Web: HTTP as transport, HTML as document format, URLs as addressing. The design choices were ruthlessly pragmatic — one-way links instead of Nelson’s bidirectional ones; no transclusion; no built-in payment; no version history. The minimalism was the point. The web shipped because it was small enough to ship, and it scaled because the cost of participating was low enough that anyone could participate.

Wikipedia — the institutional layer (2001–)

Wikipedia is the lineage’s solution to the maintenance problem. Bush’s Memex assumed a single researcher building trails for personal use. Engelbart and Nelson assumed augmented professional workgroups. The web assumed individual authors publishing pages. Wikipedia, founded by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger in 2001, solved associative knowledge at population scale by recruiting volunteer labor, building editorial governance (NPOV, verifiability, no original research), and accepting the trade-offs that come with consensus-by-edit-war.

Wikipedia is the only descendant of the Memex that has succeeded at the original civilizational scope — externalized associative knowledge, shared, and maintained. What the lineage hands 0mn1.one

[[0mn1one|The platform]]‘s wiki is consciously in this lineage. Specifically:

  • Associative trails are the unit, not pages. Following a trail through linked entries — bioregion → species → ecological-concept → person → trail → essay — is the cognitive primitive Bush identified. The wiki’s typed-relations frontmatter and the auto-generated See also blocks are the contemporary mechanism.
  • Augmentation, not automation. Engelbart’s framing — that the goal is human-computer partnership, not human replacement — is how the wiki is built and maintained: LLMs are tools in the editing loop, not authors of the platform.
  • Maximalist where it matters; minimalist where it scales. [[0mn1one|The platform]] takes Nelson’s commitment to bidirectional linking and persistent [[eating-the-landscape|identity]] seriously, while accepting Berners-Lee’s pragmatism about deployment.
