Concept
Maple Sugarbush
Also known as: maple farm, sugar bush, maple syrup operation, sugarhouse
A working stand of sugar maples — typically *Acer saccharum*, sometimes red maple, black maple, or silver maple — tapped each spring to produce maple syrup, maple sugar, and maple-derived products. A sugarbush is a forest that is also a farm: the trees are not planted in rows, the canopy is the operation, and the harvest is one to six weeks per year. The directory's sugarbush entries are concentrated in northern New England, upstate New York, Vermont, Quebec-border regions, the Upper Midwest, and the southern Appalachian highlands.
A maple sugarbush is a forest of tapped maples that produces syrup, sugar, candy, and value-added maple goods. The land is woodland the rest of the year and a farm for the few weeks of the sap run.
