Leafcutter bee

Solitary cavity-nesting native bees, ~140 species in North America, named for the females' habit of cutting precise oval and circular pieces from plant leaves to line their nest cells. Active mid-summer; dark-colored, somewhat similar in size to honeybees. The alfalfa leafcutter bee (Megachile rotundata, introduced from Europe) is the principal commercial pollinator of alfalfa seed production, where its specific morphology makes it the only effective pollinator. Biology
Like mason bees, leafcutter bees nest in cavities — hollow stems, beetle holes in dead wood, soft soil cracks, ready-made bee houses. Unlike mason bees, they cut leaf disks to line their nest cells.
A female leafcutter:

Active mid-summer through early fall (slightly later than mason bees). Females overwinter as pupae in their cells; emerge as adults the following summer.

Alfalfa leafcutter bees

Honeybees learn to bypass this mechanism, gathering nectar without tripping the flower (so without pollination). Leafcutter bees cannot bypass it; every flower visit results in pollination.
Commercial alfalfa-seed production in the U.S. and Canada relies on managed populations of M. rotundata. They’re sold in cardboard nesting blocks, set out in alfalfa fields, and harvested at the end of the season.
