Krahô

Also known as: Krahô, Mehĩ, Krahô people, Krahô nation

An Indigenous nation of the Cerrado (Timbira (Macro-Jê)), of the cerrado of eastern Tocantins, in the Kraolândia territory. The Krahô continue traditional savanna management — seed-keeping, controlled burning, native-fruit gathering — and their associations are the natural Indigenous-led commerce partners for aligned listings in the biome.

The Krahô (Mehĩ) are an Indigenous nation of the Cerrado — Timbira (Macro-Jê) — of the cerrado of eastern Tocantins, in the Kraolândia territory.

Who they are

The Krahô are among the most active seed-keepers of the Cerrado: their community seed houses conserve dozens of traditional maize, bean and squash landraces, and their controlled-burn calendar is studied as a model of Indigenous fire management for a fire-built biome. Krahô associations sell traditional landrace seed and crafts and partner on agroecology and fire-management programmes.

Why this entry

The Cerrado is being converted faster than the Amazon is being cleared, and its Indigenous nations are among the few land managers holding intact biome against that frontier. Naming the Krahô as a nation — not as background to a biome page — connects the Cerrado directory to real Indigenous-led partners and credits the savanna knowledge the native-fruit economy depends on. They stand beside the geraizeiro and quilombola communities as the biome’s traditional custodians.
