A fast-growing rhizomatous perennial introduced from East Asia in the 19th century — and one of the most-aggressive invasive plants in temperate North America and Europe. Hollow bamboo-like stems reach 10 ft in a single season; rhizomes can extend 60+ ft horizontally and ~10 ft deep, and can resprout from fragments as small as 1 cm. Common across Staten Island in riparian zones, road edges, vacant lots. Internationally recognized as a building-foundation hazard; UK property mortgages can be denied near established stands.

Reynoutria japonica (formerly Fallopia japonica and Polygonum cuspidatum) is a 6–10 ft rhizomatous perennial native to Japan, Korea, and northern China. Introduced to Britain in the 1840s as an ornamental; spread to North America by the 1860s. Now ranked among the world’s worst invasive species (IUCN top 100).

Aggressive growth: hollow bamboo-like stems emerge from rhizomes in early spring and reach full height by mid-summer. Rhizome network can extend 60+ ft horizontally and 10 ft deep. Reproduces both by seed and by rhizome fragments — a fragment as small as 1 cm can establish a new colony. Bulldozing established stands often spreads the species rather than eliminating it.

Stems can grow through pavement, foundations, and structural materials. UK building societies routinely deny mortgages on properties with Japanese knotweed within 7 m of structures because of the documented foundation-damage risk.

Eradication is exceptionally difficult. Effective approaches require multi-year glyphosate treatments, deep excavation, or sustained mechanical-cutting regimes — all with mixed success.

The young spring shoots are edible (similar to rhubarb) and have been promoted in some contexts as “eat the invasive” wild food. Some traditional medicine systems use the rhizomes (resveratrol source).

Common across the borough’s riparian zones (along streams in the Greenbelt and to the South Shore), road edges, abandoned lots, vacant building edges. NYC Parks runs control programs; eradication has not been achieved at borough scale.
