Phoca vitulina
A medium-sized true seal that is the most-common marine mammal in New York Harbor — and an indicator of the harbor's deepening ecological recovery. Harbor seals overwinter in NY waters, with regular sightings around Staten Island's South Shore (Conference House Park, Mount Loretto, Lemon Creek) and the harbor edges from October through April. Population observations have climbed steadily over the last two decades.

Phoca vitulina is a 130–370 lb true seal (Phocidae — earless seals) found across the Northern Hemisphere’s coastal waters. Diet: fish, [[octopus|octopus]], squid, crustaceans. Hauls out on rocks, ice, sandbars, and floating structures to rest and thermoregulate. Generally solitary or in small groups when in the water; gregarious at haul-out sites.
Heavily hunted in U.S. waters until the Marine Mammal Protection Act (1972). Population recovery has been multi-decade and is ongoing.
On Staten Island
Increasingly common winter visitors.
