Hyla versicolor
A small (1.5–2.5 inch) treefrog capable of changing color from grey to green to blend with tree bark or leaves. Mostly arboreal; descends to ponds and pools to breed. Distinctive trilling call carries far in summer. Common at Staten Island's freshwater wetlands and surrounding forest — Greenbelt, Mount Loretto's freshwater pond, Wolfe's Pond Park, residential ponds.

Hyla versicolor is a 1.5–2.5 inch hylid treefrog. Color-changing camouflage. Adhesive toe pads allow climbing on bark, leaves, vertical surfaces. Mostly arboreal outside of breeding.
Breeding migrations to ponds in late spring. Distinctive long trilled call (lasting ~1–3 seconds) is a defining sound of summer evenings in eastern hardwood forests. The species is cryptic with the closely-related Cope’s gray treefrog (H. chrysoscelis) — distinguishable mainly by call and chromosome count; both species are present across much of their shared range.
Notable for partial freeze tolerance — adults can survive partial body freezing, though not as fully as wood frogs.
