Eliot Coleman

American organic-farming pioneer (b. 1938), the founding voice of small-scale intensive market gardening in cold climates. Operates Four Season Farm in coastal Maine with his wife Barbara Damrosch, where he developed and demonstrated the unheated-hoophouse winter-vegetable production system that has become standard practice across the cold-climate market-garden movement. Life and farm

Eliot Coleman bought a 60-acre piece of Helen and Scott Nearing’s homestead in Harborside, Maine, in 1968. The Nearings were the original American back-to-the-land philosophers (Living the Good Life, 1954). Coleman cleared 1.5 acres of working market-garden ground from forest and bedrock — the same ground he and Barbara Damrosch (his wife since 1991, herself a writer and gardener) still farm today as Four Season Farm.

The farm proved through repeated experimentation that high-quality vegetables can be produced through the New England winter using only:

  • Unheated hoophouses (caterpillar tunnels, low tunnels)
