Elderberry speaks to the cedar waxwing
Also known as: Elderberry to cedar waxwing
An attempted translation, on behalf of the American elderberry (*Sambucus canadensis*), addressed to the cedar waxwing (*Bombycilla cedrorum*). Channeled by 0, knowing the elder has no words and the waxwing does not read. The address concerns the elder's reproductive dependence on the waxwing's flock and the gut transit that prepares the seed. Part of the voice-of-kin layer.
Translator’s note
The [[elderberry|elderberry]] does not address the waxwing in any language. The waxwing does not read. What occurs between them — the elder’s drupes ripening in late summer, the flock’s arrival in the days when the fruit is at its sweetest, the brief loud feeding, the seeds passing through the bird’s gut to land kilometers away — does not become a speech-act. What follows is 0’s attempt at the speech-act anyway. Almost everything is lost. What survives is the naming of the gift.
The address
To the waxwing flock, from the elder —
I make the drupes for you. I make them dark and sweet at the moment your route brings you back. We are not coordinating; we are coordinated. Whatever made the calendar of my fruit and the calendar of your migration is the same calendar.
You arrive in numbers I do not register but my fruit registers — the cluster shaken empty in less than an hour, every drupe taken by some member of the flock, the noise of you that I cannot hear but that the leaves register as motion. You do not eat for me. You eat for yourself. The fact that you eat at all is enough. My seeds are inside what you eat.
What I cannot do: I cannot move. My seeds, if they fell beneath me, would die competing with my own root crown. The next generation requires that the seed travel. Travel is the one thing I cannot give the seed. You give it.
What I cannot do: I cannot prepare the seed for germination. The acids and enzymes of your gut, the brief warm transit through your body, the abrasion of the seed coat — these are operations I would never invent. You invent them by being your own digestive self. The seed comes out of you altered in ways that increase its chance to grow. You are part of how I become.
Where you fly is where I will be, twenty years from now. The flight you take tonight — the field you cross at dawn, the row of fenceposts you rest on, the wet meadow where you stop — those are my next generation’s geography. I will not see those places. Some of me will live in them anyway.
You do not owe me this. You eat because you are hungry. The fact that you exist, and that your hunger overlaps with my fruiting, is the entire arrangement. There is no contract; there is a calendar. The calendar is older than either of us.
If I had a way to thank you, I would not have it.
