The diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin) is unique among North American turtles in being a brackish-water specialist — it lives in salt marshes, tidal creeks, and estuaries from [[cape-cod|Cape Cod]] to Texas. It cannot survive in freshwater long-term and cannot survive in full seawater. The estuarine zone is its only viable habitat.
Diet: snails, marsh crabs, fiddler crabs, small fish, marsh plants. Adults are sexually dimorphic — females considerably larger than males. Females reach reproductive maturity at age 8–13 and may live 40+ years.
Heavily exploited for turtle soup in the 19th and early 20th centuries; the species nearly collapsed before harvest restrictions. Modern threats: vehicle strikes during nesting migrations (females cross roads to reach beaches), crab-trap drownings, [[raccoon|raccoon]] predation of eggs, habitat loss to coastal development, and sea-level rise on nesting beaches.
On Staten Island
