The world's second-largest tropical rainforest after the Amazon — ~3 million km² of contiguous lowland forest drained by the Congo River and its massive tributaries. What’s distinctive

The forest is more elevationally and floristically uniform than the Amazon’s, with strong endemism along the river system and on the basin’s western highlands. Wild Coffea canephora (robusta coffee) is native to the basin’s understory.
The Congo River discharges the second-greatest volume of any river on Earth after the Amazon, and is one of only two large tropical rivers whose annual hydrograph remains relatively undammed (compared to the heavily dammed Amazon tributaries and Mekong).
Indigenous and contemporary
Mbendjele Yaka, Bambuti (Mbuti, Efe), Aka, Twa, Baka, Bayaka — the Indigenous forest peoples often grouped under the colonial term “pygmies” — together number around 250,000–500,000 across the basin and have lived in continuous relationship with the forest for tens of thousands of years. Bantu farming communities began entering the forest ~4,000 years ago. Conservation models in the basin are slowly shifting from fortress-conservation toward Indigenous community forestry — the natural entry point for aligned commerce.
