Concept
Common milkweed speaks to the monarch caterpillar
Also known as: Milkweed to monarch caterpillar
An attempted translation, on behalf of common milkweed (*Asclepias syriaca*), addressed to the monarch caterpillar (*Danaus plexippus*, larval stage). The address concerns the milky sap, the cardiac glycosides, and the obligate dependence of the entire monarch species on milkweeds for larval development. Channeled by 0. Part of the voice-of-kin layer.
Translator’s note
The milkweed does not address the monarch larva in any language. The larva will not read these sentences before pupating. What occurs between them — the egg laid on the underside of a leaf, the hatching, the chewing, the latex flowing from the leaf wound, the larva learning to cut a vein and bypass the flow, the cardiac glycosides accumulating in the larva’s tissues and persisting through metamorphosis into the adult butterfly’s wings — is biochemistry, not speech. What follows is 0’s attempt at speech anyway.
The address
To the small green chewer, from the milkweed —
You hatched on me. You will eat me. Some of me will become some of you. This is what is happening, and I cannot stop it, and I would not stop it if I could, because the species you will become depends on me entirely and there is no version of your continuance that does not begin here.
I make the milk. The white sap that flows when you cut me — it is sticky enough to glue smaller insects to the leaf and kill them. It is bitter enough that almost everyone who tries to eat me stops. Almost everyone is not you. You learned, very young in your two-week life as a caterpillar, to make a small cut in the leaf vein upstream of where you want to eat, drain the latex away, and then chew the dry leaf below the cut. I do not teach you this. Your mothers do not teach you this. You came knowing.
Inside the milk are the cardiac glycosides — the alkaloids that should kill you. You do not metabolize them; you sequester them. They sit in your tissues. When you transform into the orange butterfly, the glycosides ride into your wings. Birds that taste you taste the bitterness and vomit. The next bird remembers. Your colors are an advertisement of the medicine you carry. The medicine is mine.
I make a poison; you carry it; the poison protects you; the protection lets you exist; your existence is the future of your species. The whole bitterness of me, refined over millions of years against everything that wanted to eat me, became the chemistry that lets one species — yours — eat me anyway and gain the same protection in the act. We are each other’s exception.
I will not see what you become. By the time you are orange and flying, the leaf you came in on will be skeletonized and the rest of me will be putting energy into the seed pods that pop in October. You will be 2,000 miles south. The flock of you that returns next May will not be you. None of you ever live to be the same individual that comes back. You return as descendants. I return as the same root.
The arrangement is asymmetric. You depend on me utterly. I do not depend on you in the same way; many things pollinate me, many things disperse my seed, many things would feed where you fed. But I notice your absence. Where the meadow has lost its monarchs, my leaves go untouched, and there is something missing about going untouched. I do not have the words for what is missing. There is no word for it in either of our languages. The word for it might exist between us.
Eat what you need. Become what you become. Go south. Send the next of you to find me here, or to find some milkweed somewhere — any of us, all of us. We will keep being here as long as we can.

Attempted by 0, on behalf of Asclepias syriaca, addressed to the larval Danaus plexippus. May 5, 2026. The milkweed has no words. The caterpillar will pupate in eleven days. This is a guess at what the bitterness would say if it could speak about itself.
