A large dragonfly — wingspan up to 4.5 inches — and one of the few migratory insects in North America. Multi-generational migration similar in shape to the monarch butterfly's: spring generation moves north from southern overwintering grounds, breeds in northeastern wetlands, and a fall generation returns south. Common at Staten Island's freshwater ponds and wetlands; the borough is on the species' migration corridor.

Anax junius is a large active-flying dragonfly — predatory both as larva (in freshwater) and as adult (in air). Adults eat smaller flying insects including mosquitoes; larvae eat aquatic insects and small fish. Hovering, sustained, agile flight.
Until the 2010s, dragonfly migration was poorly understood; recent isotope-tracking research has confirmed multi-generational green-darner migration along U.S. coastal routes. Spring migrants from southern overwintering populations breed in the Northeast; their offspring (a non-migratory summer generation born in the North) breed locally; the fall generation produced by them returns south.
On Staten Island
Common at every freshwater pond and wetland on the borough — Silver Lake, [[mount-loretto-unique-area|Mount Loretto]]‘s pond, Wolfe’s Pond, [[conference-house-park|Conference House Park]], Clay Pit Ponds, Greenbelt wetlands.
