Prunus maritima is a 4–8 ft sprawling shrub specialized for sandy, salt-spray-exposed coastal habitat from Maine to Maryland. Tolerates salt spray, drought, and nutrient-poor sand. White flowers in May; fruit ripens August–September, ranging in color from yellow to deep purple. Fruit is tart and fleshy with a single hard pit.
Long history of indigenous and colonial use as a wild food. New Jersey, [[cape-cod|Cape Cod]], and Long Island all maintain small commercial beach-plum cultivation. Habitat loss to coastal development has reduced wild populations significantly across the species’ range.
On Staten Island
