Soil
→ SoilStart at the ground. Soil is the thin living skin of the planet — a few inches to a few meters of coupled mineral, biological, and biochemical system holding the conditions under which nearly all terrestrial life is possible. Not dirt. A community of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, arthropods, and root systems, woven into a mineral matrix and bound by carbon. Healthy soil is 5% organic matter doing most of the work — feeding the microbes who feed the plants who feed everything else. Most of agriculture's history is the story of either rebuilding this thin layer or losing it. Begin here.

Water
→ WaterSoil without water is dirt again. Water is the medium through which everything in the soil moves — nutrients, microbial signals, root uptake, the breath of mycorrhizal networks. Globally, surface freshwater is less than 0.013% of all water on the planet; the rest is ocean, ice, and deep groundwater on millennial timescales. The atmospheric water cycle turns over every ten days at the surface — fast enough that local management of soil cover and forest cover demonstrably affects local rainfall on annual timescales. Water connects soil to sky. Tending soil is, indirectly, tending water.

Sun
→ SunWater and soil hold the chemistry; the Sun pays for it. Every calorie in every food on this wiki was, at some recent point, sunlight, captured by chlorophyll into glucose through the photosynthesis equation that cyanobacteria invented 2.4 billion years ago. The Sun delivers about 1,361 watts to every square meter at the top of Earth's atmosphere; roughly half reaches the ground. From that flow, mediated through one biochemical reaction, comes nearly all life on this planet. A regenerative farm is, mechanically, a solar capture system. Maximize green cover. Stack vertically. Convert more of the incoming photons into living tissue and root them in the soil.

Air
→ AirWhat gets respired in and out of every plant, every animal, every aerobic microbe in the soil. The atmosphere is 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen — the oxygen is the byproduct of three billion years of photosynthesis, biology's longest-running infrastructure project. Soil is 25% air by volume; root respiration depends on it; aerobic microbial life depends on it; you and I depend on it directly thousands of times per day. Of the four substrates, air is the one this generation is doing the most measurable damage to: CO₂ at 425 ppm, methane tripled, particulate matter killing 4 million people a year. Air closes the loop — and then opens it again.

Back to Soil
→ SoilCarbon enters the air as CO₂. Plants pull it down through photosynthesis. They pump some into the soil through root exudates feeding the microbes. The microbes build it into stable organic matter. The organic matter holds water that holds nutrients that feed the next generation of plants. The cycle closes. Healthy soil pulls carbon out of the air; depleted soil releases it back. Healthy soil holds water that the air would otherwise carry away; depleted soil sheds rainfall as runoff. Healthy soil grows plants that capture sunlight; depleted soil grows nothing or grows it poorly. The four substrates are not a list. They are one system, looped through itself, and the leverage point that touches all of it is soil. Begin here. End here. Begin again.
